The founder of Frendlee had created a functional form-building tool, but user retention was low because surveys existed in an emotional vacuum. Sending members off-platform to sterile external forms broke conversational flow and alienated less tech-savvy users. To tackle the post-COVID loneliness challenge, the platform needed to evolve from a dry data utility into a warm, community-first social ecosystem.

The legacy design was functional but clinical, creating friction for our older demographic. We shifted the architecture from "Data Entry" to "Belonging," wrapping complex form tools inside a familiar social feed to reduce cognitive load and foster genuine connection.
I transformed the platform from an isolated form builder into a community-led social feed built around GetStream. Instead of sending members away to external survey links, interactive forms, polls, and checklists were embedded directly inside the group stream. Group members could respond with a single tap and immediately view collective results, turning routine data collection into shared moments of social validation.

We inverted the product structure: groups and feeds became the primary environment, and the form builder became an in-stream creation tool for group leaders to share check-ins and volunteer sign-ups.
To reduce cognitive fatigue - especially for older community members - we adopted one-question-per-screen progressive disclosure with large touch targets, raising completion rates over traditional long forms.
Completing a check-in immediately showed collective group responses and participation milestones, encouraging lurkers to engage and building genuine community rapport.
Core interaction models were grounded in proven psychological principles to reduce cognitive load and keep complex workflows intuitive for first-time users.

Things to Consider
Happy path
Slack: channels with a post within 24h have 4× higher 30-day retention. In-feed forms dramatically reduce time-to-first-engagement.
Sad Path
Channels with zero posts in 7 days have a 90% permanent abandonment probability (Slack Internal Research). First-content velocity is the #1 predictor of channel health.
A channel member encounters a form in their feed and responds inline.
Things to Consider
Happy path
Typeform: one-question-per-screen completion rate is 59.1% vs 41.4% for long-scroll (Typeform Benchmark, 2023).
Sad Path
External-redirect embeds see 30–50% higher drop-off than native renders (Typeform Research, 2023).
Key personas synthesized from stakeholder interviews, support escalations, and direct workflow observations.
"I want to gather structured feedback from my community without sending them to an external tool that breaks the conversation."

"I want to engage with my groups in one place, not across five different apps for chat, polls, events, and forms."

Frendlee successfully transitioned from a dry utility into a warm, community-first social ecosystem, demonstrating that empathetic UI design can actively counteract digital loneliness.
